About

Hello World!

eclectOpac is a WordPress blog running the open source bibliographic plugin/utility Scriblio, as a test instance for cataloging books, recorded media, graphic materials and digital resources held in our personal research collections. Subject areas covered within the collections (in no particular order) include: Sino-Tibetan languages and linguistics; Asian religions and philosophy; English and American literature and literary criticism; fine arts; new media and popular culture; music, musicians and music history; premodern Chinese history and material culture; organ music and organists; Chinese language and literature; library and information science.

Our current testing aims to help us understand the unique functionalities brought to the WP environment by the Scriblio plugin. Among our specific goals, we seek to understand how to control the import of bibliographic records from selected metadata repositories; how to manually create new bibliographic records; how to display and create services against the two types of record (imported and manually created) within the same collection or category; and how to replace or overwrite one bibliographic record with another (replacing manual with imported, or vice versa) as may be appropriate. As well, we need to grasp the existing functionalities of the installed search engine, and understand how to optimize it for handling Chinese and other non-roman text data efficiently.

We’d like to thank the staff of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library, for making available their workshop materials on installation and customization of Scriblio, within the HKUST information environment.
